Tenuta III – Vaughan, ON
Our architecture firm was entrusted with a rare and nuanced mandate: transform one of the original estate homes in the neighbourhood into a refined, high-performance residence—without erasing its identity.
Casa Curva is a luxury residential renovation in Vaughan that transforms a 1990s estate home into a refined contemporary residence. As experienced modern residential architects servind teh Greater Toronto Area, the project demonstrates how an existing house can be reimagined through spatial clarity, material restoration, and thoughtful architectural refinement.
Rather than replacing the original structure, the design approach focused on reorganizing the interior layout, improving performance, and strengthening the architectural character of the home while preserving its presence within the neighbourhood.
FrankFranco Architects approached the renovation as an exercise in refinement rather than replacement. The design reorganizes the main floor to create a clearer sequence of living spaces while introducing stronger visual and physical connections to the surrounding gardens.
The interior architecture emphasizes proportion, light, and material continuity. A restrained palette of natural stone, warm wood millwork, and soft plaster surfaces creates a calm architectural backdrop while allowing key spaces to emerge as focal moments within the home. A double-height living room is anchored by a monolithic stone fireplace that rises vertically through the space, introducing both scale and visual balance. Floor-to-ceiling glazing frames views of the rear garden and pool terrace, bringing natural light deep into the interior. Elsewhere, large-format stone flooring and custom oak millwork establish a sense of quiet luxury consistent with the work of modern residential architects designing high-end custom homes.
The kitchen was completely reimagined as the functional centre of the home. Custom wood cabinetry, integrated storage walls, and a large stone island organize the space while maintaining visual clarity and openness. Glazed display cabinets and warm material finishes introduce a sense of craftsmanship while supporting the home’s contemporary interior character. Adjacent dining areas maintain a more intimate atmosphere, defined by soft curves in the ceiling and integrated millwork. The result is a kitchen environment designed for both everyday family life and large-scale entertaining.
The stair hall serves as one of the defining architectural moments within the house. A floating wood staircase rises through a double-height volume framed by vertical wood slats and expansive windows. Natural light filters through the stair space, creating changing patterns of light and shadow throughout the day. The stair becomes both circulation and architectural feature, reinforcing the sense of openness and spatial continuity that defines the renovated home.
A significant component of the renovation involved restoring and reusing materials from the existing structure. Original Wiarton stone and precast elements were carefully salvaged and reintegrated into the exterior construction. Cedar shake roofing and lead-coated copper detailing reinforce the home’s English manor influence while elevating the overall craftsmanship of the residence. By blending restored materials with contemporary architectural interventions, the house maintains its historic character while functioning as a modern luxury home.
Casa Curva reflects the philosophy of FrankFranco Architects: that thoughtful design can transform an existing residence into a contemporary home without erasing its architectural identity.
Through spatial reorganization, material refinement, and improved building performance, the project demonstrates how an aging estate home can evolve into a sophisticated residence suited for modern living. As award winning architects and modern residential architects based in Toronto, the firm continues to design custom homes, luxury renovations, and modern cottages across Toronto, Vaughan, and Muskoka.
