Woodland Ridge – Vaughan, ON
Set on a rare two-acre woodland property in Vaughan, just north of Toronto, The Woodland House is a mid century modern residential project shaped by landscape, memory, and daily life. Designed by FrankFranco Architects, the home reflects the studio’s belief that thoughtful modern residential architecture begins with listening—to the site, to the history of a place, and, ultimately, to the people who will live there.
The original 1954 midcentury cottage established both the character and the challenge. Instead of starting over, the design builds on the existing structure, reworking it through a contemporary lens while preserving its proportions and spirit. This approach allowed the house to evolve naturally, respecting its origins while supporting modern family life. As residential architects working across Toronto and Vaughan, we prioritize longevity and clarity over trend-driven design.

From the outset, the surrounding woodland actively shaped the architecture. We placed openings to frame specific views, pulled daylight deep into the plan, and oriented key living spaces toward the ravine. As seasons change, light, shadow, and foliage continuously redefine the interior experience. This direct relationship between architecture and landscape defines our approach to modern residential design.
Equally important, material choices reinforce that connection to place. Custom millwork and crafted architectural details introduce warmth and texture, with subtle references to natural patterns drawn from the site itself. Rather than decorative gestures, these elements provide structure, rhythm, and durability—qualities central to our work as award-winning residential architects.
Inside, the home is organized around the rhythms of everyday life. Open, light-filled living spaces support gathering and connection, while more private rooms are designed as quiet retreats. In particular, bedrooms are oriented toward the trees, with floor-to-ceiling windows that draw the landscape into daily routines and create moments of pause and reflection.
Ultimately, The Woodland House is more than a renovation. It represents a thoughtful evolution of an existing home—one that respects its midcentury origins while responding to how people live today. In this way, the project reflects the values of a Toronto-based architecture firm committed to clarity, craft, and connection, and to creating modern residential architecture that feels both grounded and enduring.
